What is the strategy for addressing the GP recruitment crisis?

NHS England has committed to doubling the rate of growth of the medical workforce to create 5,000 additional doctors working in general practice by 2020/21. This will include:

  • Increasing GP training places to 3,250 a year
  • Attracting an extra 500 doctors from overseas.
  • Attracting and retaining an extra 500 GPs back into English general practice.
  • Rolling out 250 new post-certificate of completion of training (CCT) fellowships to provide further training opportunities in areas of poorest GP recruitment.
