How to access healthcare in B&NES over the May bank holiday weekend

If you need medical attention over the May bank holiday weekend, make sure you know how to get the right advice at the right time, and from the right person.

Follow these three simple steps if you need help:

  1. Ask your pharmacist

Pharmacists are expert in many aspects of healthcare and can offer advice on a wide range of long-term conditions and common illnesses such as coughs, colds and stomach upsets. You don’t need an appointment and many pharmacies have private consultation areas so they are a good first port of call. Your pharmacist will tell you if you need further medical attention.

See pharmacy opening times for the August bank holiday below.

  1. Call 111

If your GP surgery is closed and you’re not sure where to go then you should call NHS 111, which is free and available 24/7.

An adviser will ask questions to assess your symptoms and then give you the advice you need or direct you to the best service to help you in your area. If required, the adviser will book you an appointment with the GP out-of-hours service at the Royal United Hospital in Bath or Paulton Memorial Hospital.

  1. Emergency departments and 999 are for life-threatening emergencies

Emergency departments and the ambulance service are for life-threatening emergencies and accidents including loss of consciousness, suspected heart attacks, breathing difficulties or severe bleeding that cannot be stopped. Emergency departments are always extremely busy over the bank holiday weekend with long waiting times, so please call NHS 111 for advice first if you are not sure where to go.
